Welcoming the stranger, offering hospitality, is transformative. The stranger’s life is transformed, as they become a guest who is honored and welcomed. But the hosts, too, are transformed by the story of the one who was formerly a stranger. Letty Russell defines hospitality as “the practice of God’s welcome by reaching across difference to participate in God’s actions bringing justice and healing to our world in crisis.” It's a practice to which we are all called. Our tables should be crowded with those who need community, and there should always be those at the table with whom we somehow disagree. Consider who you might not have shown hospitality toward in the past, or who God might be calling you to welcome. Who are the people who need to be around your crowded table?
